A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing the Right Campsite Setup

Match the site to your RV

Measure your RV and consider slide-outs, awnings, tow vehicle parking, and room to manoeuvre. Ask the campground about site dimensions and access before booking, especially if your rig is long or has a wide turning radius.

Think about your daily routine

If you cook outdoors, you may value room for a table and safe cooking area. If you prefer quiet mornings, consider how nearby roads or shared facilities might affect the experience. Choose a setup based on the way you actually camp.

Understand utility connections

Confirm the location and type of electrical, water, and sewer hookups where offered. Use compatible equipment, inspect cords and hoses, and follow campground safety rules. If a connection looks damaged or unfamiliar, ask staff before using it.

Plan for wind and changing weather

Open prairie conditions can bring strong winds and quick weather changes. Secure awnings and loose gear according to manufacturer instructions, and know when to retract equipment. Avoid placing lightweight objects where they can blow into neighbouring sites.

Leave room for safe movement

Keep pathways, utility access, and emergency routes clear. Position steps, mats, and outdoor furniture so people can move safely at night. Use outdoor lighting thoughtfully to reduce trip hazards without shining directly into neighbouring RVs.

Adjust after the first night

Notice where the sun falls, how the wind moves, and what you use most often. Small adjustments can make the rest of the stay more comfortable.

Every RV and campground has its own requirements. Check your owner’s manual, current local guidance, and resort policies before making safety, maintenance, or booking decisions.
