RV Electrical Hookups: Safety Checks Before You Plug In

RV campsite power connection

Inspect before connecting

Look for cracked plugs, bent pins, frayed cords, scorching, or moisture around electrical equipment. Do not use damaged components. If a pedestal or connection appears unsafe, stop and contact campground staff.

Use equipment rated for your RV

Know the electrical service your RV requires and use the correct cord and adapters. Do not force a mismatched connection or improvise with household extension cords. Follow the RV and equipment manufacturers’ instructions.

Consider electrical protection

A suitable electrical management device can identify certain wiring problems or protect against some electrical events, depending on its design. Choose equipment compatible with your RV and understand what it does and does not protect against.

Connect in the right sequence

Follow the manufacturer’s procedure for switching power off before plugging or unplugging, and make sure connections are secure and dry. Avoid handling electrical equipment in wet conditions. If you are uncertain, ask a qualified RV technician.

Watch for warning signs

Repeated breaker trips, unusual smells, heat, buzzing, or flickering lights deserve attention. Disconnect power only if safe and seek qualified help. Never bypass a breaker or safety device to keep appliances running.

Keep the area clear

Arrange cords and hoses so they do not create trip hazards or block access to the pedestal. Keep children and pets away from utility equipment and follow site-specific rules.

Every RV and campground has its own requirements. Check your owner’s manual, current local guidance, and resort policies before making safety, maintenance, or booking decisions.
